Relax, Unwind, and Recharge

When I think about National Relaxation Day on August 15, 2022, I immediately picture myself on a Caribbean beach with my toes in the sand, a juicy fiction book in my lap, the sounds of crashing waves, and of course, a tropical drink for sipping. As much as I would enjoy this form of relaxation daily, it’s not the most realistic form for many people. We are all busy with life, work, family, friends, and various events that we can forget to RELAX when it’s needed most.

20 Ways to Relax on National Relaxation Day — Calm Blog has various ideas for relaxation of the mind, body, and soul. If you enjoy meditating, growing an herb garden, getting crafty with paint, walking in nature, or just getting hugs from your loved ones, this website delivers different forms of relaxation ideas for everyone to enjoy. If you are still thinking about what to choose, check out some of the examples below. I use these suggestions to remind myself about the importance of relaxation and self-care.

Meditation

Practicing mindfulness is something everyone should dedicate some time to on a weekly basis. With our hectic schedules, meditation can help everyone become more aware of their feelings, emotions, and actions. You can do this for 5 minutes or 15 minutes, but no matter how much time you spend on this form of relaxation, you will see amazing benefits and improvements in your mood. Try it guided with an expert at first. You can find 5-minute meditation practices from YouTube, or apps like Calm or Headspace

Cuddle up with a Book

One of my favorite things to do when I need a moment to relax is read. Normally it’s a juicy fiction story or a book about self-care, but no matter the text, it always helps me remember that everything else can wait because it’s time to read, relax, and unwind. Reading is one of the best ways to relax. According to recent research, even a few minutes of reading can be enough to reduce the stress levels by more than two thirds. Writing is also a highly cathartic activity that also stimulates your imagination. I always check out my local library or used bookstores in the area for great suggestions. If you prefer to read a digital book, you can download great audiobooks from Audible or a newer app I used called, Galatea, gives readers the option to read or listen to the book. Whichever you prefer, find a book and enjoy!

Nap in a Hammock

My favorite part of the week is hammock time. The hammock in our backyard is strategically placed under the trees so I can see the sky while enjoying a soft breeze. A bonus feature: I get to read or listen to a good book while enjoying the soft sway of my hammock in the wind. Now this is a powerful way to relax!

Take a Nature Walk

One form of relaxation I work hard to do on a weekly basis is walking while enjoying the sounds and beauty of nature around me. Whether it’s walking about my neighborhood, or taking my family to a nearby beach, trail, or park, finding the beauty in nature by enjoying the world using our five senses is priceless. Nature walks always release endorphins, and my mind is quickly put at ease. To be close to nature is a deep and essential need of the human being. Go for a relaxing walk, breathe the fresh air, pay attention to the smells, and sounds around you, so you can lose yourself to the experience.

Dance to your Favorite Song

Dance to the beat of your own drum and dance like no one is watching! Dance in your house, backyard, or bedroom. Dance to one of your favorite songs with someone you care about. Dance like you are the character from your favorite show or movie. No matter how you dance, dancing can reduce levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Much like aerobic exercise, dance provides relief from stress and tension. Physical exercise elevates dopamine and endorphins, two neurotransmitters responsible for feelings of pleasure and happiness.

Dancing also promotes the experience of “flow”, which is an almost meditative state that allows the dancer to focus solely on the movements, music, and rhythms instead of worries and stress. This experience of focus and flow also contributes to learning how to be more aware and mindful of one’s mental state.

Ask for a Hug

One of my favorite ways to stay calm and release endorphins is a hug from someone I care deeply about. My daughter is the ultimate hugger and I immediately feel more calm and less stressed when we embrace. Hugs help to release Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a chemical in our bodies that scientists sometimes call the “cuddle hormone.” This is because its levels rise when we hug, touch, or sit close to someone else. Oxytocin is associated with happiness and less stress. Whether you give or receive a hug, hugs can make us better human beings.
