National Give Something Away Day

Do you know what pack rats, parents everywhere and educators have in common? We have too much stuff! Today is our day folks- National Give Something Away Day is every year on July 15th. This is the perfect opportunity to give to someone who may be in need. Not only will it make you feel great to help someone else but you get to de-clutter as well- everyone wins!

For National Give Something Away Day, you can finally clear out some of your things that have accumulated in your attic or basement; reorganize the playroom; or rummage through your closet for clothes you forgot you even had. A helpful rule of thumb- If you haven’t touched it in at least a year- give it away!

National Give Something Away Day was created on July 15, 2015, by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher. She wanted to encourage kindness and generosity- for people to give freely without expecting anything in return. According to GivingUSA, giving increased dramatically the following year.

Would you believe- According to National Today, 1 out of 10 Americans have so many things that they have to rent an additional storage unit away from their home?  On average, Americans have about 300,000 items in their home. I couldn’t imagine counting all of the things in my house but between myself, my husband, and three kids, I’d say I’m probably one of those people! All the more reason to take advantage of this day of generosity!

Looking for other ways to give? Below is a list of some other creative ways to be a part of this wonderful day!

Volunteer in your community:

Giving away some of your time by volunteering around your community is another great way to participate. Often times local churches, food pantries, libraries, and shelters are looking for some helping hands. Starting a fundraiser to raise money for somewhere/someone locally in need is another way to help in your community.

Charities:

Is there a special cause that’s close to your heart? Donating to a charity that you’re passionate about is another great way to give. I know we are all so busy with our own lives so this is a great option for anyone who would like to give something away but is unable to find the time to go through their own belongings. Random acts of giving:

Many people in my life spend their days working outside which makes me hyper-aware of how hard they work. During the holiday season, I always leave a big bucket of snacks and water out for all delivery drivers as a thank you for all that they do. National Give Something Away Day may be another opportunity to show appreciation. Handing out water to people working outside in the heat, or even paying for the person’s coffee in line behind you is something else we can do on this day. Do you know someone who lives alone, is injured, or elderly- in need of some entertainment? Cook them a meal or simply go spend a little time with them.

Studies have shown that when someone is the recipient of a good deed, they are more likely to pay it forward. So, in honor of National Give Something Away day- Let’s GIVE SOMETHING AWAY.
